Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:
Formulates action plans with defined objectives, targets, and responsibilities to support agreed upon sustainability
strategies. Facilitates environmental stewardship and promotes communication, cooperation, and promotion of the
organizations’ sustainability goals. Prepares and maintains various reports and serves as a liaison between Goodwill
and both internal departments and outside entities. Ensures that Goodwill remains in compliance with the State and
other agencies as it applies to recycling and sustainability related matters.

Essential Function Statement(s):

 

1. Gathers and analyzes data about agency waste to identify new opportunities for landfill
diversion, reuse, and recycling.

 

2. Ensures compliance with all legal requirements established by local, State and Federal regulations.


3. Provides input and ensures the implementation of goals, and action plans are in function. Assesses
and proposes sustainability initiatives to decision makers.


4. Collaborates with the Communication Department to communicate the environmental impact of
Goodwill’s sustainability efforts to community stakeholders.


5. Collaborates with current or potential environmental partners to develop and implement approved
sustainability projects coordinating common goals and identifying opportunities between different
organizations. Grows partnerships with community organizations in the waste and recycling industry.


6. Creates and executes a sustainability plan with a cross-functional team to lead the
organization toward the goal of zero-waste.


7. Identifies ways to reduce waste disposal, energy consumption and other identifiable areas to
continuously work towards achieving zero waste goals.


8. Develops/conducts presentations and training materials on environmental responsibility to promote
stewardship and commitment to sustainability and compliance.
9. Researches and identifies possible external funding sources for sustainability initiatives. Pursues
grants to support new waste reduction projects and fund infrastructure needs.


10. Regularly conducts various sustainability audits including but not limited to waste/ recycling and
energy/water.


11. Learns from other Goodwill organizations that have sustainability innovative programs.


12. Manages implementation of organizational initiatives, such as 4DX methodology.


13. Educates and engages ambassadors to drive sustainable business practices across the
organization.


14. Explores new markets for reusing unsold donated goods to promote a circular economy and
establishes holistic sustainability metrics to align priorities and measure the impact of new initiatives
relating to donated goods, energy efficiency, material procurement and facilities.


15. Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

SKILLS & ABILITIES:


Education: Degree in Environmental Science or Sustainability, or related field preferred.


Experience: A minimum of five years’ related experience. Strong organizational skills. Excellent written/verbal
communication. Experience in the environmental field cultivating a culture of sustainability throughout the
organization.


Computer Skills: Must have proficient skills in the following: Email, MS Word, Power Point, Microsoft Excel.


Certificates and Licenses: Must have a valid CA driver’s license, proof of insurance and driving record
acceptable by Goodwill’s insurance company. Must have an insured vehicle.

 

Work Schedule: 5 Days includes weekends and evenings
